Basic Hoist Operating Tips and Guidelines

Before using your ShoreStation hoist read the Owner’s Manual for detailed operation instructions and safety information. Here are some basic guidelines to follow:

Know the maximum capacity of your hoist.
It is important not to exceed the maximum carrying capacity of your hoist. Overloading it could cause mechanical failure and serious personal injury. Be especially cautious of hoists without canopies because the boat’s weight could greatly increase during a rainstorm and exceed the hoist’s capacity.

Never board a boat while it is raised on the hoist.
Before boarding, always lower the hoist so the boat is almost floating free, but still stabilized by the platform.

Do not let children play on or around the hoist.
Children should only be allowed near the hoist with adult supervision.

Properly positioning the boat on the hoist.
When positioning the boat on the platform, be sure the lower unit of the boat is solidly against the hoist’s motor stop before raising. This will prevent the boat from moving as it is raised. Craft with inboard motors require a front-end boat stop on the hoist. This option protects your strut and prop from striking the hoist frame during loading. Both the front-end boat stop and the load guides function best when the platform is lowered just enough to allow your craft to float off the hoist.

Use caution during maintenance and repairs.
During maintenance or repairs always remove the boat from the hoist and be sure the platform is fully lowered. Set the wheel lock in the “locked” position and do not reach through the wheel at any time.
When oiling the winch chain, be careful that no oil falls on the clutch plates. This will reduce the braking action of the self-energizing clutch.
NEVER work on a boat while it is in the hoist.

Checking and adjusting lift cables
Be sure the lift cables are adjusted with no slack at the lowest position. Check the cables periodically for fraying; if this occurs, replace it immediately.

Level installation is important.
Make sure the hoist is installed level. Out-of-level installation may cause hoist hang up and serious personal injury.

For added safety, always lock your hoist.
Always lock your hoist when it is unattended for any period of time. This protects both you and your boating equipment.

Maintenance Tips

The ShoreStation hoist requires very little maintenance; however, we do recommend the following steps to be taken at regular intervals:

1.
Lubricating the wheel threads…

  • When greasing the hub, lower the platform until it rests on the lower frame.
  • Remove the acorn nut and flat washer on the lift wheel drive shaft. Turn the wheel counter-clockwise and remove it.
  • Place a light application of grease on the course threads. You'll find a tube of the recommended grease inside the winch housing.
  • After greasing the threads, thread the wheel back on until the winch mechanism begins to ratchet.
  • Replace the flat washer and acorn nut. Test the winch mechanism to make sure the brake system is functioning properly and will support a load in the raised position. If it does, the hoist is now ready to operate.
